Our Story
The Double D Bar Ranch was set up to provide homes for
prior abused or unwanted farm animals. We purchased our farm in September
1997 so that we could have our horses with us rather than having the
expense and regulations & time schedules of other farms. When we
rode the horses in the surrounding woods,
they were getting their legs
and faces scratched by overgrown brush. When the 4 acres of cleared land
adjacent to our property became available for sale in February 1999,
we decided to buy it and set up a small riding arena for ourselves and
invite some friends over with similar interests in horse riding. We knew
the former owner of the property had about 50 animals over there that
he was going to take with him when he moved. The animals included 14
goats, 20 sheep, 8 fallow deer, some rabbits, chickens, turkeys and a
peacock.
As closing came closer he wasn't moving his animals out
and when we approached him about it he had changed his mind about moving
them and decided to slaughter them instead. We quickly discussed this
and decided to buy the animals from him, we could afford within our budget
to keep the 50 animals. When we took over the property, the pens were
two feet deep in decayed, compressed hay, urine and manure.
The sheep
and goats were kept together while each required different kinds of feed
and different housing conditions. Baby lambs died due to lack of lambing
pens. Goats require closed quarters (they are very susceptible to pneumonia
in the cold night air) while sheep need circulation but protection from
the cold and dampness. We had totally rebuilt the pens, providing the
proper conditions for the proper animals. When people heard about the
way we improved the place, building new pens, coops, etc. they started
calling us asking if we would take their animals that they could no longer
keep:
- We have to move and can't keep the animal
- The town won't give us permission to keep them
- Neighbors complained
- They outgrew the family and were no longer cute but didn't want to see them killed So as a courtesy we took the animals in.
Within the first year we went from 50 to 650 animals. We
were taking them in from agencies such as the SPCA & CACC. They gave
us no financial support. Our feed bills were running $4,500 per month.
We went thru our savings, put a home equity loan on the house which had
been free and clear, then eventually changed it to a mortgage. Since
we were facing dire financial problems the SPCA agents suggested we apply
for a non-profit status and 501 (c)(3) so we could collect donations
to help the animals. We were approved by the state and IRS. We pull no
salaries or administration fees. Every penny in donations received go
to the animal's care.
GOALS OF THE DOUBLE D BAR RANCH
The goals of the Double D Bar Ranch is to take in prior abused or unwanted farm animals. Provide the proper housing, feed and medical attention for each animal. Rehabilitate the animal. Adopt out to a good home where it can live out the balance of it's natural life in comfort. If any female goat or sheep that we take in happens to be pregnant and they give birth to a male, we neuter the male within the first 10 days of it's life, so that if we can't adopt it out at least it won't reproduce here.
It is a large expense to have the adult male goats neutered, so we,
therefore, keep these males penned separately from the females. Seldom
will any livestock female be spayed since they must have a deep anesthesia
and most goats and sheep stress easily under anesthesia, and there is
a good chance you would loose them. Our 2 bulls are castrated as well
as all the male pigs both Pot Belly & Yorkshire This little goat
was 1 of 12 animals taken in from the C.A.C.C. on August 12, 2002 . They
had been confiscated from an illegal slaughter house in Harlem . There
were 3 little ones
like this one: Too young to be taken from their mother,
it refused a bottle and would nibble on a tiny bit of hay, not enough
to keep them alive. We tried to supplement feedings with yogurt mixed
with a high protein formula and ended up losing 2 of them after 2 weeks.
Rich spent nights up in the barn with them to no avail. The other 10
survived and thrived. Some of which have been adopted into good homes.
We have a "Sponsor A Pet" Program where a person can sponsor
a farm pet. The animal remains here at the haven while they get to name
it, visit with it and play with it, sometimes the pet goes home for a
few hours with the Sponsor Parent for a visit. The Sponsor Parent then
pays a set fee each month to help support the animal. For example a rabbit
is $5.00 per month, a goat is $20.00 per month and a bull or cow is $50.00
per month. You will h
ave your picture taken with the animal or if you
can't be present, a picture and history as far as it is known of the
animal will be sent to you.
If you fail to keep up with your sponsorship obligation for 2 consecutive months, then the animal can be put up for adoption. This makes a wonderful holiday or birthday gift fo r a neice, nephew, grandchild or friend in their honor. One of our volunteers helping trim one of the goat's feet. Volunteers are needed on all levels:
- Feeding the animals
- Cleaning the animals
- Watering the animals
- Medicating the animals
Sometimes we just need someone to hold an animal while it is medicated,
wormed or having it's hooves trimmed. Sometimes they just need someone
to play with them and give them treats. Many of our volunteers feel inner
rewards by working with the animals and a sense of peace when they come
to the haven.
